Zipf’s Law and the Universality Class of the Fragmentation Phase Transition
نویسندگان
چکیده
We show that Zipf’s Law for the largest clusters is not valid in an exact sense at the critical point of the fragmentation phase transition, contrary to previous claims. Instead, the extracted distributions of the largest clusters reflects the choice of universality class through the value of the critical exponent τ .

We discuss the meaning of Zipf’s law in nuclear multifragmentation. We remark that Zipf’s law is a consequence of a power law fragment size distribution with exponent τ ≃ 2. We also recall why the presence of such distribution is not a reliable signal of a liquid-gas phase transition. متن کاملmultifragmentation, Zipf’s law
Some of the progress in determining the phase boundaries of the nuclear phase diagram, the location of the critical point of the nuclear fragmentation phase transition, and the values of the critical exponents of this transition is reviewed. The recently postulated connection of the size of the largest fragments as a function of their rank with Zipf’s law known from linguistics is discussed, an...
متن کاملMoment Analysis and Zipf Law
The moment analysis method and nuclear Zipf’s law of fragment size distributions are reviewed to study nuclear disassembly. In this report, we present a compilation of both theoretical and experimental studies on moment analysis and Zipf law performed so far. The relationship of both methods to a possible critical behavior or phase transition of nuclear disassembly is discussed. In addition, sc...
متن کاملUniversality of Zipf’s Law
We introduce a simple and generic model that reproduces Zipf’s law. By regarding the time evolution of the model as a random walk in the logarithmic scale, we explain theoretically why this model reproduces Zipf’s law. The explanation shows that the behavior of the model is very robust and universal.
متن کاملFragmentation of shells.
We present a theoretical and experimental study of the fragmentation of closed thin shells made of a disordered brittle material. Experiments were performed on brown and white hen egg shells under two different loading conditions: impact with a hard wall and explosion by a combustible mixture. Both give rise to power law fragment size distributions. A three-dimensional discrete element model of...
